Functional Fitness Training

Functional Training

Functional Fitness Training?

Functional Fitness Training goes by many names (functional fitness, compound training, ADL, movement training etc.). Yet many people (and trainers) mimic explosive training like athletes and wrongly call it Functional Fitness. Functional Fitness is more movement and compound training than anything else. Functional strength training involves performing work against resistance in such a manner that the improvements in strength directly enhance the performance of movements so that an individual’s activities of daily living are easier to perform. Basically, the primary goal of functional training is to transfer the improvements in strength achieved in one movement to enhancing the performance of another movement by affecting the entire neuromuscular system. If you do functional fitness training regularly you will see how it affects all aspects of your life and allows your muscle to work together stronger to accomplish a task.

Examples

Now that we have a basic understanding of what functional fitness is let us look at a few simple exercises that will transfer over into your daily life.

  • Example 1: Squats: Squats are a prime example, if you want to stand from a seated position or if you want to sit down in a controlled manner. Squats mimic the movement of sitting/standing and also strengthen the muscles to make the sitting/standing movement easier.
  • Example 2: Deadlifts: Deadlifts are great! If you have ever squatted to pick up your groceries, then you have done a version of a deadlift. Deadlifts strengthen the legs, glutes, and back which are prime movers in almost any everyday movement.
  • Example 3: Step up to overhead press. This exercise mimic stepping up on a stool and putting an item up high on a shelf or cabinet. This exercise unifies the quadriceps, hamstrings, shoulders and more to complete a task.

These are just a few of the basic functional fitness exercises. You can advance these to no end. Start with a basic pushup (helps with getting off the ground) and you can advance to medicine ball pushups, or to a one-handed pushup plank on a medicine ball with the free hand doing a dumbbell row. One more thing to keep in mind is that functional training always works side by side with the 5 fundamental movements of the human body. Which are:

  1. Push Movement: (For example a pushup or bench press)
  2. Pull Movement: (For example a dumbbell row or pullup)
  3. Squat/Lift Movement: (For example squats weather body weight or with weights)
  4. Single Leg Movements: (For example lunge or walking/jogging/running)
  5. Rotational Movements: (For example oblique twists or wood chops)

These five fundamental movements are in all functional fitness training. That being said there is one major factor that I need to cover. All of the above describes functional fitness training, however you should never exclude traditional weight lifting to help improve your “weak links”. For example, you may want to increase your ability to do a pullup. Traditional weight training for biceps and latissimus dorsi lifting will greatly improve those “weak links that prevent you from doing a pullup.
